Domes

Endless Mile, Buenos Aires, domes

During the 300 years from the city’s second foundation in 1580 until the 1880′s Buenos Aires remained a surprisingly humble place… a far cry from the grandiose city it is today. Early paintings & engravings of Buenos Aires, however, show one remarkable feature—church domes. It was the beginning of a trend. By 1900 when immigration was at its peak, European-born architects brought European-inspired design with them & showered the city in domes. This singular feature makes visitors feel more like they are on the Viejo Continente rather than the New World. Endless Mile shows you the location of 75 of the best domes in Buenos Aires, helping you discover even more of this fascinating city. Available as a PDF.

Once

Endless Mile, Buenos Aires, Once

Mention visiting the area popularly known as Once & most porteños furl their brow… with good reason. Noisy, cramped & hectic, the area can be a sensory overload for the average person. But Once holds several surprises beneath its rather boisterous exterior. Home to faded & forgotten Art Nouveau architecture, a bit of Art Deco, a unique mix of Jewish, Korean & Paraguayan immigrants plus the most amazing wholesale marketplace in the city, taking a short walk down a single street in the neighborhood of Once reveals another fascinating version of Buenos Aires… one that most visitors miss. Available as a PDF.

Plaza de Mayo

Endless Mile, Buenos Aires, Plaza de Mayo

Capital cities often possess a nexus—one particular area that defines not only the city, but also the nation & its people. Forming the heart of the microcentro or downtown core, Plaza de Mayo places Argentine politics, religion & economics on common ground. No single place better represents the merging of these major institutions for over 430 years. If a course titled Buenos Aires 101 existed, it would be all about Plaza de Mayo… the best spot to explore current issues through past glories & defeats. Endless Mile explains a vibrant, cosmopolitan & often chaotic city on a guided walk—making use of historic photographs, archival material & ongoing coverage of current events. Our latest release in Jan 2012, available as a PDF.
